Complete Me, Please!               Series 1

In contemporary society, humans are taught the initial concept and social standard of what is right and what is wrong, either by their parents at home or by their teachers in the education system. Humans follow this structure of social standards to establish their routine lifestyles so that people learn how to use ordinary objects, and understand the relations between various objects in the home. They know the correct way to organize objects and place them into particular locations around the house in order to maintain a tidy environment. However, not all objects are easy to store as people might expect. People have no idea how to deal with some objects even though they are useful utensils. The aim of this project is to re-educate people by creating a series of objects related to the household environment which combine two individual utensils into a single appliance. Each must be bi-functional, pertain to a mutually beneficial relationship and provide a home for the two component products, which would otherwise be classed as ‘homeless’ objects.

When people use the broom and dustpan at the home, the last step of the process is to raise the dustpan and pour the trash into a rubbish bin. Actually, this should be the end of cleaning process, however there is still another step for the user. They have to take the two tools and locate them back to their unnoticed place.

The design solution addresses this issue by simplifying or removing the need for this final step. The connected object is the rubbish bin in this design concept. The user can simply locate the broom and dustpan within the rubbish bin instead of carrying them to their unnoticed place.

The corner of the square column bin is shaped in a way that creates space for the dustpan, and the dustpan is designed to provide space for the foldable broom. When users remove the dustpan, which holds the foldable broom, from the corner of the rubbish bin, the bin consequently tilts by 10 degrees towards that corner. This tilted angle creates a visual imbalance, which prompts the user to return the dustpan and brush to this location once the floor is clean. It also becomes more accessible for emptying the dustpan into. Once users have finished the cleaning process and returned the pan and brush, the bin is complete and regains its original form.
